Getting Started

Lessons are available both in-person and online, and new students are welcome on an ongoing basis. Whether you’re picking up singing for the first time, returning after a long break, or just looking for a low-pressure place to explore your voice — this studio is built for that.

To get started, send an email to josephadamstenor@gmail.com with a little about yourself and what you’re hoping to get out of lessons. Joseph will be in touch to discuss fit, availability, rates, and scheduling.

Teaching Philosophy

Singing is a system, not a single skill. The voice draws on three interdependent components — breath, phonation, and resonance — and a problem in one almost always shows up as a symptom in another. Teaching that treats these in isolation tends to produce singers who can execute exercises but fall apart under pressure. The goal here is coordination: learning how the whole instrument works so that technique becomes instinct rather than checklist.

In practice, this means lessons are built around listening — to what the voice is doing, and to what the student is experiencing. A lot of teaching relies on external instruction: do this, don’t do that. This studio leans heavily on internal awareness instead. You’ll be asked a lot of questions about what you feel, what you notice, what changes when something shifts. The aim is to make you a student of your own voice, not just a follower of directions.

The methods can get a little unorthodox. Imagery, free association, and the occasional sideways analogy are all fair game if they make something click. Memorization strategies, physical alignment work, and attention to dramatic intention are woven into technical study rather than treated as separate concerns. Singing is a full-brain, full-body activity, and lessons here reflect that.

For beginners especially, there is something that tends to happen in a voice studio that goes beyond learning to sing. Paying close attention to your own instrument — learning to hear yourself honestly, to regulate your breath under pressure, to express something and mean it — has a way of building self-knowledge that carries well past the lesson. That is not the sales pitch. It is just what tends to happen.
